Southbury Ambulance Association has developed some tips in honor of American Heart Month.

February is American Heart Month, so here are some tips to keep your heart healthy. Taking action to maintain your cardiovascular health can help keep you safe from heart disease and other major heart problems.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. One way to improve your heart health is to make sure to get enough quality sleep. A lack of sleep increases the risk of hypertension which can significantly affect the heart.

Another tip is to make sure to get enough physical activity. According to Harvard Medical School, exercise conditions the heart which allows it to pump blood more efficiently. You should aim for around 150 minutes of exercise a week.

Finally, managing your stress can help your cardiovascular health significantly. According to the National Institutes of Health, stress can impact your nervous system and lead to high blood pressure. It’s important to make time to relax and prioritize your mental health.

Taking care of your heart can help you make sure that you’ll continue to live a happy and healthy life. Since February is American Heart Month we hope that these tips will be helpful in maintaining your cardiovascular health.
